Title: From A Texas Trilogy: Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander
Where: The Empty Space Theatre
Address: 706 Oak Street (in Pizzaville shopping center)
When: Doors open at 7:30 PM Show at 8 PM
Cost: Free with donations gratefully accepted
Details: Lone-star Laughter at The Empty Space Back in the early 1970s in Dallas, Texas, an actor named Preston Jones wondered why there were no plays being written about modern-day Texas. Certainly, New York, Chicago, and London were well-represented by contemporary plays, but what about the Lone Star State and its worthy denizens? Prompted by a director friend, Preston Jones went about creating the fictitious Texas town of Bradleyville and about twenty of its most fascinating characters. He ended up writing A Texas Trilogy, three equally wonderful slice-of-life comedies each with the unique flavor of small-town Texas. The plays were originally produced at the Dallas Theater Center, then moved to the Kennedy Center in DC, before a very successful run on Broadway. The plays in A Texas Trilogy are The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia, The Oldest Living Graduate, and the Empty Space's June production Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander. In Lu Ann, we see the title character in three different decades: In 1953, as a boy-crazy high school cheerleader getting set to graduate and take on the world; in 1963, as a beautician, single mother, and "tough as a damned boot"; in 1973, as a sadder but wiser woman nearing 40, raising a rebellious teenage daughter, and coping with what her life has become, all the time maintaining her trademark sense of humor. Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander, like the title character herself, is funny, charming, sassy, heartbreaking, and irresistible. The Empty Space's Cory Rickard (a Texan herself) portrays the title role. The role of Lu Ann's brother is played by Bakersfield College Theatre Department Professor Randy Messick in a rare performance. Other cast members include Barbara Gagnon, Ronnie Hargrave, Jeremiah Heitman, Jason Monroe, Matt Borton, Pablo Reyes, David Stenson, Keith Silvas, Joe Mitchell, and Erika Gaines. This comedy is directed by The Empty Space's Artistic Director Bob Kempf, and it is his intention to do each of the plays in A Texas Trilogy at The Empty Space over the next few years. The show runs June 10, 11, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25 at 8 PM with a Sunday Matinee on June 12 at 4 PM. Make sure you plan a June trip to Bradleyville, Texas. It's close by ... it's right inside The Empty Space. Seating is limited and can only be guaranteed by making a reservation. Call 327-PLAY to make a reservation or for more info.

Title: An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein
Where: The Empty Space Theatre
Address: 706 Oak Street (in Pizzaville shopping center)
When:11 PM
Cost: Free with donations gratefully accepted
Details: Our late night production in June is An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein directed by Joe Mitchell and Guinevere Park-Hall. With performances June 10 , 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25, at 11 PM, this show promises to be a wacky night of fun entertainment. You may remember Shel Silverstein as the lauded poet, songwriter and author of children's books, but he also wrote dozens of short plays, which are deeply infused with the same wicked sense of humor that made him famous in the first place. This is not your children's Silverstein. Featuring the very talented ensemble cast of Cory Rickard, Kamel Haddad, Sarah Downie, Pablo Reyes, Sarah Vara, Sarah Taylor, Ronnie Hargrave, Amy Hall, David Stenson, Erika Gaines, Jessica Delcid, Jeremiah Heitman, Ari Sarzotti, Jarrod Ackerly, Tracy Herda, Kevin Lively, and Rebecca Lotze this is one late night production you have to see to believe. There is definetly something for everyone in this darkly comic world of Shel Silverstein's, a world where nothing is as it seems and where the most innocent conversation can turn menacing in an instant. Don't miss this bizarre show sure to keep you laughing all night long!
